    The dabbawalla service

It is a very efficient and old association. It was created in 1890 in India. Mumbai is the biggest city in India.

In the service there are 5000 people. They carry and deliver 200,000 lunch boxes everyday. They make only 1 mistake for 1 million clients.

The service is impressive because they don’t use any technology.

They use trains and bicycles. They can’t read and write (they are illiterate).

Prince Charles visited the service because it’s very important in Mumbai.

    What is a dabba?

A dabba is a pail of home-cooked food that people carry and deliver to your school or your office.

Home-cooked food is better / tastier than the food of the canteen.

In the pail, there are many spices.

On the pail, there is a handle to carry it and a colour code (yellow and red letters and numbers).

The word “dabba” is a Hindi word. It means “box”.

The word “dabbawalla” means the person who delivers the food. They look like cooks with white hats but it’s not a catering service.
