• Thursday, February 14th (it’s Valentine’s day!)

    • The postures :

The marshalls and Ruby have the same position of hands : their right fist shows their determination. They look like soldiers marching to a war/battlefield.

    • The marshalls : they have an official letter /paper /document in their pocket. It shows that they have an important mission.

The problem we all live with

    Norman Rockwell, 1964

    The painting :

The lines on the pavement/sidewalk : it looks like a timeline .

    Slavery→ segregation → desegregation → civil rights → freedom ?

Ruby just crossed the segregation line and she’s walking into the civil rights period.

The crack on the wall : It crosses the insult ‘nigger’, it represents the end of segregation : people don’t want racism anymore.

The smashed tomato : it looks like an eagle, the symbol of the USA.

Symbols of the USA : the white stars on a blue background (on Ruby’s copybooks), the red pen, the different lines in the painting….

    ---------------------------------

For Thursday 14/02: Finir de copier la leçon

-Faire des recherches sur Rockwell el rédiger 6-10 lignes sur lui en anglais.

    Comparison between the two extracts

In the first video, the school’s front door is clean whereras in the second extract, there are graffiti on the white column. It is written ‘nigger’ ( a very racist insult) and K.K.K (Ku klux Klan : a white supremacist group/cult). Someone just threw a tomato, it missed Ruby and it hit the white column. The red smashed tomato represents the blood / it symbolises the violence between the two groups.

In the second video, we can see the crowd behind fences to protect the little girl and they create a path.

    ---------------------------------------

For Monday 11/02: apprendre la leçon.

  • Hello everybody!

Thursday, February 7th (the seventh) 2019

Similarities and differences in the two videos

In the second video, we can see Ruby’s second day of school.

The white crowd is still there, the parents are angry but we can also see two sides : black people are on the other side.

The four marshalls are in both extracts but Ruby’s dress is different : in the first extract it was pink whereas in the second extract, it’s white (the colour of innocence/peace/hope and purity).

In the first extract Ruby is with her mum but she looks scared, anxious/nervous and sad whereas in the second extract, she’s alone but she looks determined and confident.

For Friday 8/02 : learn the lesson. (être capable de citer au moins 2 points communs/différences).

    Friday, February 1st (the first)

    Ruby’s first school day.

First, we can see marshalls parking in front of a house in a Black neighbourhood. They came to escort Ruby Bridges and her mother to a new school. They drive her to the school and she’s followed by a big crowd of angry parents.

She waits all day long in front of the headmaster’s office. She doesn’t study with white pupils because the teachers don’t accept her. She is rejected and a woman calls her “a jigaboo”. She is treated like a danger… they look scared because she is using their toilet.
