What really happened to the trees?

In the scene, the family is eating in the living-room at night.
At the beginning, the mom says: “don't play with your food!” because the grand-ma and the son are playing.
The son asks: “What happened to the real trees?” and the grand-ma answers Ted must find the Once-Ler, he will tell him everything.
→ In the future, trees will not be real. They will be electronic and they will have a remote for the seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter).
