Tuesday, June 5th

Hello,

Today, you answered a quiz about the text and you did a recap of all the important information.

The description of Whitechapel

In London, in 1888, Whitechapel was* a destitute district whereas the West End was* flourishing.

Contrary to the West End, the East End was* a crime-ridden place.

This urban district was* overpopulated.

The apartments were* very small squalid tenements because there were* 7 or 8 occupants per room.

The streets were* grim, gruesome and desolate.

There were* a lot of unlit alleys.

There was* no sanitation or drainage, so there were* a lot of diseases and death.

Homework for Thursday 8th: être capable de décrire Whitechapel (apprendre leçon par coeur).

Next time, you'll write the end of the lesson:

The living conditions were* harsh:

Many people were very poor and had* meager earnings so there was* a lot of starvation.

Many women were* forced /t/ into prostitution because they were extremely poor.

There were* 1200 (one thousand two hundred) prostitutes in Whitechapel and 62 brothels.
