The dabbawalla business
The dabbawallas are very important in Mumbai. More than 200 000 people use this delivery system.
The business started in 1890. Today, there are 5 000 dabbawallas in the association.
They only use their bikes/bicycles and the local train.
They are illiterate so they use a code to know the address of the customer.
They write a code on the dabba: a colour and a number to identify the correct destination.
Everybody in the association is equal: they share the money in equal parts.
