Blog à destination des élèves du collège Joliot Curie (69500 Bron) mis en place par M. Hattais (Anglais) et Mme Parisi (Italien) en 2013

Tuesday, January 31st

Hello everyone!

Here is today's lesson

The problem we all live with

The document is a painting (oil on canvas), it was made by Norman

Rockwell, an American painter. It represents Ruby Bridges and four

marshalls (4 federal policemen) walking in the street.

The little girl is in the middle and there are 2 men/marshalls on the

left and 2 on the right : they are escorting the Black girl. Ruby Bridges

is in white ( a white dress, a white ribbon, white socks and shoes),it

contrasts with her skin color/the color of her skin. The painter wants

to put the girl in perspective and also show her innocence and purity

. In the background, there is a smashed tomato and graffiti on the

wall(« nigger/kkk »).

The painting denounces racism in the USA in the 1960s. Ruby Bridges

was the first balck girl who went to a white school after segregation.

This period was very violent (the smashed tomato symbolizes

blood/represents the violence of the situation).
