Whitechapel: the crime scene

In the 1880s, Whitechapel was a destitute and crime-ridden neighbourhood. On the contrary, the West End was flourishing.

Living conditions were very harsh in the East End. There was inadequate sanitation and poor drainage. People lived crammed in squalid tenements with 7 or 8 occupants per room. Starvation and diseases caused death every day.

Meager earnings and harsh conditions forced a lot of women to become prostitutes. It was dangerous because they often worked in unlit alleys.
