Child labour in Victorian times

Before 1842, children could work in coal mines.

In 1842, there was a law. After 1842, children couldn’t work in coal mines anymore.

Before 1880, school was not compulsory. After 1880, children had to go to school until ten. At ten, they could leave school.

Children could work in factories, mills, mines, in the streets (on open markets) or in the country (in the fields).

Today, in France, school is compulsory until sixteen.

Homework for Thursday 28th: apprendre la leçon et relire le texte.
