Today, we revised for your final test.

Here is what you may need for tomorrow:

REVISION

-What happened in 1865?

Abraham Lincoln ended/abolished slavery in the USA.

-What did slaves do?

They worked in plantations (cotton fields, tobacco fields...)

-How did they work?

They worked hard and they had to go fast. It was forbidden to talk but they could sing.

-Explain the term « Jim Crow law »:

A crow is a black bird and 'Jim' was a nickname for all slaves. These laws were made after 1865 to separate blacks and whites.It was the beginning of segregation. 

-What was forbidden by these laws?

Black people couldn 't go to hotels/schools/toilets with White people.

In buses, black people had to sit at the back.

A white person couldn't marry a black person.

Black people had to drink from separate water fountains.

Black people would work as servants.

Children were not allowed to go to the same schools.

Adults were forbidden to play dice or dominoes together!

-Who was against the law? What did they do to fight the system?

-Malcolm X chose violence to protest against the system/segragation.

-Rosa Parks would not/wouldn't stand up and give up her seat because she was very tired.

-Martin Luther King Jr would not accept segregation and organised non-violent protests (demonstrations, marches...)

-What do you know about Norman Rockwell?

He was a painter. He made hyperrealistic paintings. (=They look like photos.) He painted « The problem we all live with », it's about Ruby Bridges, the first Afro-American girl who went to a white school.
