Education in the 19th century

1.             Picture description

This document is a picture of a classroom. It shows school life in the 1850s in Australia. In the classroom, there are only girls. They are all wearing the same uniform. They look very serious and concentrated.

2.             School life in the 1850s

School was not compulsory. Parents decided if they wanted to send their children to school. They had to pay. Many boys went* to school whereas most of the girls stayed at home. Education was quite strict. For example, if they didn’t listen to the teacher, they were given the strap or the cane.

3.             School rules

In the 1850s in Australia, girls couldn’t show a bare ankle whereas today, in France girls can wear short skirts.
