The death of his mother

Jamal remembers the answer to the question because…

→ his mother was* killed by a violent demonstrator. She was washing the laundry; the kids were playing in the water, swimming and enjoying themselves when a civil war burst* out.

→ he saw* a man on fire. He felt* betrayed by the police because they didn't do anything. It was* traumatic for him because the policemen didn't think it was a strange thing there was* an attack.

Maybe, the war started...

… because the untouchables felt* inferior and they were* outcast. And maybe they wanted to get revenge. They wanted to integrate society.

… because of religion. The war opposed the Hindus and the Muslims.
