Ellis Island and Helen Meinwald's story

Hi guys,

today we worked on the diary of Helen Meinwald and corrected your homework. Here is what we said:

- When Ellis Island was open, 12 million immigrants went to the USA.
- They stayed a few hours on the island or up to a year if they were sick (they were put in quaranteen).
- Helen Meinwald was from Poland.
- She travelled with her family and "Lawrence". Lawrence may have been her brother or a boy she may have met on the boat.

Helen's story and feelings:

She began her trip in Poland. She was sad to leave because her grand-parents couldn't come with them.
On the boat, she couldn't sleep because it was crowded. She could hear people's conversations. Moreover, she was hungry because she couldn't eat. Her mother was worried.
