Why do British people wear poppies for remembrance day ?

A poppy is a bright red flower which quickly dies. These flowers grew in battlefields after the first world war : there were thousands in the trenches.

Now people wear a poppy on their chests/hearts to show their respect to those who died. The red colour symbolizes blood and the uniform of the Royal army.

People pay about one pound (or they can give a more generous donation) to wear their poppy with pride. (they are proud to wear thier poppies). The money is given to associations for veterans but also women who are widows and orphans.
